Patrick Mabiiho Nyakaana

Executive Secretary

Patrick Mabiiho Nyakaana was appointed Executive Secretary of the Uganda Human Rights Commission effective 1st June, 2017. He took oath of office on 2nd June, 2017. He is the head of Administration as well the Accounting Officer of the Commission.

Patrick Mabiiho Nyakaana is a trained lawyer having graduated from the Faculty of Law of Makerere University (the current Makerere School of Law) in 1994, and later trained at the Law Development Centre to become a legal practitioner. He also graduated from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute with an Executive Masters Degree in Business Administration. Patrick Mabiiho Nyakaana is an enrolled advocate of Courts of Judicature, a Commissioner for Oaths and a Notaries Public.

He is an experienced legal practitioner having worked with various Law Firms as a practicing advocate, Associate Partner. He has been in the academic world as senior lecturer at the Law Development Centre for over ten years; and continues to be an external examiner at the same legal training institute. He is an experienced administrator having worked as a Commissioner/Head of the Department at the Uganda Law Reform Commission, where he also had a stint as Acting Executive Secretary. He earlier worked at the USAID/Millennium Challenge Corporation funded Anti-Corruption Country Threshold Project (ACT) as a Deputy Component Manager and DPP Investigation and Prosecution Program Support Officer.

Mr. Nyakaana is the Chancellor, Ruwenzori Diocese of the Church of Uganda where he carries out advisory roles to the Bishop and the diocese on all legal matters and he presides over Diocesan Tribunals and provides legal advice to Diocesan Board. He is a member of the Uganda Law Society and the East African law Society.

With over 23 years of experience in diverse fields, Mr. Nyakaana brings to the Uganda Human Rights Commission multitudinous knowledge and professional expertise that will buttress and strengthen institutional fervor in pursuit of the crave to fulfil its mandate of protecting and promoting Human Rights and freedoms of the people of Uganda.
