The new Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission Med S.K Kaggwa recently attended the 7th Conference of National Human Rights Institutions in Rabat in the Kingdome of Morocco from 3rd to 5th November 2009.
The Conference which drew 34 African National Human Rights Institutions, regional organisations, United Nations Agencies, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the ICC and regional and international NGOs as observers, among others, was intended to strengthen the capacities of African National Human Rights Institutions and raise awareness of their role in strengthening justice and keeping peace. The 7th conference which follows the sixth one held in Kigali, Rwanda in October 2007, was held under the theme ’Peace and Justice: Role of National Human Rights Institutions.’ A workshop on the ‘Role of National Human Rights Institutions in the protection of human rights defenders in Africa; was held immediately after the Conference on 6-7 November 2009 in Rabat and was attended by all representatives of National Human Rights Institutions present. The Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission Med S.K Kaggwa presented a paper on ‘Human Rights Education and Promotion of a Human Rights Culture: The experience of the Uganda Human Rights Commission.’
